It really depends on many factors for a move south. I lived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for about 6 years. I loved it there especially the warmer climate. However, I could not see my family as easily. This was a big factor to move back to where I am currently located. You have to also deal with the humid (hot) conditions in the summer. It's not too bad if you are close to water and in air conditioning. The other factor to consider is the Hurricane season. At times you will have evacuate. I think it's important to consider all of factors.....no doubt the warmer weather in the South is a HUGE draw!
Not many people look, but check out the tax structure of each state. It will make a huge difference in stretching your dollar once retired. New Mexico gives you 4 seasons, with a milder summer than Arizona and milder winter than Michigan. Also, low humidity (Florida is like a sweat factory with its high humidity). Really depends on what makes you happy and what activities you want to do. One caution on Florida- there are a LOT of people there now. Traffic, congestion and all of the things that come with lots of people are all part of the Floria experience.
My wife and I and kids would love to move to Florida. I am in my 40s and I think Florida has by far the best winter weather around. Summers are hot, but at least the sun is out. Last time we were vacationing in Florida, I asked a couple (from Ohio) who lived down there, "what do you do about the hot summers"? He said, "I'll tell you what I do...when the temperature drops to 70, I have the heat on in my car". In other words, it's all relative. I don't think the people in Florida complain too much about the climate there. That's why 23 million ppl live there, vs 7 million for Arizona and 10 million for Michigan. Cloudy winters in Michigan wear on you after so many years!
