You Can Still Go Snow Skiing in Michigan

The map above shows snow cover as of the morning of Monday, April 27. Two Michigan ski areas are expecting to be open this weekend. Last check of Michigan ski conditions at www.onthesnow.com showed Boyne Mt. open daily. They have 2 lifts operating with a 20” base. Mt. Bohemia in the U.P. will be open this weekend. They also have 2 lifts operating.
Herman, Michigan, west of Marquette is finally down to just a trace of snow on the ground. They had a continuous snow cover of 3” or more for 151 days, from Nov. 26 through April 25. They had 365” of snow this past winter. The maximum snow depth was 68 inches on March 16.
Here’s snow cover as of Monday 4/27 for the contiguous U.S. and southern Canada. A total of 9.2% of the contiguous U.S. has a snow cover. That’s almost all in the higher elevations of the western U.S. Snowfall this winter was below average over much of the West, especially in Colorado. Winter Park has had 197” of snow this winter, compared to an average of 345”, so that’s just 57% of of average. Breckenridge Ski Area had 155” of snow this winter, compared to an average of 355”. That was just 43% of average.
