Strong Winds Hit Michigan
It sure was windy last night (mainly before midnight). Here’s some peak wind gusts in West Michigan, led by a 61 mph gust at the Holland Regional Airport. The Muskegon buoy showed waves topped out at over 10 feet.
Strong winds also occurred in northern Lower Michigan and the U.P. At one point over 21,000 customers were without power in the state. The winds downed tree limbs and a couple of those limbs were blocking roads.
An official blizzard occurred in the Keweenaw Peninsula. They didn’t get much snowfall, but there sure was a lot of snow going sideways. The big Winter Festival is going on at Michigan Tech University this week.
We had some severe weather Thu. evening. There were 29 reports of wind damage and half a dozen severe hail reports. Most of the activity was in northeast TN, southeast KY, far western West Virginia and far western Virginia.
However, there was one blue dot (wind damage report) in Wisconsin southwest of Green Bay. I don’t know for sure if there was lightning with that gust. Also, there was some minor wind damage from thunderstorms south of San Francisco.
I am heading out early this Friday to emcee Math Counts at GVSU downtown. I’ve done this for roughly 30 years. The kids are super-smart and it is a pleasure to be apart of this great event.
