Muskegon native, WOOD-TV alum and WCSC (Charleston) reporter Justin Kollar joins us in the Bill Steffen Weather studio. We chatted about how he got his start in the business, his move to South Carolina and what surprised him about working in the media.
Talking to people who have been successful in the media, there are a few common themes: Most of them knew what they wanted to do at a young age. All of them faced setbacks and start-agains. All of them worked very hard - but not focusing on academics for academic’s sake. They knew their end goal and that education was the means to the end, and not the end itself. My dad has stories about getting average grades in hard classes. Justin has a story about transferring colleges to further his goals.
Some of the best advice I got as a young adult (from the father of former WXMI-17 meteorologist Peter Chan - they were family friends), was to study the lives of successful people. Then, he asked me to name people I admired - I said Juliet Dragos & Condoleeza Rice. So I hope by doing these specials we can learn a little bit about the people in the media and what has helped them succeeed.
I hope you’ll enjoy our special with Justin Kollar.
