Southern Snowstorm! Snow Reaches Mexico - Record Snowfall for Florida
Shiverin’ Snowman! The Southern Snowstorm was incredible! Snow will fell from south/southeast Texas east across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and up into the coastal areas of N. Carolina.
Here’s 5 am EST Tue. weather observations from South Texas. It’s snowing all the way down to the southern tip of Texas (and snowing across the Rio Grande River into northern Mexico!) Look at the wind at Port Isabel - gusting to 52 mph. Snow was also falling at Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Galveston. The snow has started across southern Louisiana - snowing east to Baton Rouge at 5 am and it should start in New Orleans shortly.
The first ever Blizzard Warning was issued for southwest Louisiana. Blizzard conditions (heavy snow with the visibility below 1/4 mile and gusts to 35 mph for at least 3 hours) were achieved at the lakefront airport in New Orleans, where there was lake-enhanced snow from Lake Ponchartrain. Amazin!
Could it snow in Florida? Yes indeed could, in the western Panhandle area around Pensacola especially. This may turn out to the the heaviest snowfall ever in the state of Florida.
The heaviest official snowfall in Houston was an incredible 17” on Valentine’s Day in 1895. The second biggest snowfall was 3” (on February 12, 1960 and again on January 22, 1940).
